Art, Healing, and History: A Creative Wellness Experience at Historic RittenhouseTown

Art, healing, and history came together during a corporate wellness retreat hosted by The Black Lotus at Historic RittenhouseTown in Philadelphia. The event was part of a full day of healing activities designed to give corporate professionals an opportunity to step away from the demands of daily work life and reconnect with themselves through nature, reflection, and creativity.

As the featured artist for the painting experience, I created a guided art activity inspired by one of my original paintings. Each participant received a pre-drawn canvas based on my original artwork, along with a printed version of the original painting to use as a visual guide while they painted. This allowed everyone to follow the structure of the design while still enjoying their own creative process.

The painting experience was designed to be more than simply sitting down and making art. Every detail of the setup was thoughtfully prepared so that the environment itself supported the theme of healing and reflection.

Each easel was hand painted and intentionally adorned with a crystal. For example, one canvas had a rose quartz crystal attached to the easel. Rose quartz is widely known as a stone connected to love, compassion, emotional healing, and self-worth. The words written directly on that easel reflected those qualities and included love, harmony, compassion, and emotional balance. This allowed participants to understand the meaning connected to the crystal placed before them. The crystals were not simply decorative objects. They became part of the learning experience. Participants randomly selected their easels, often discovering that the crystal and the words written beside it spoke directly to something they needed in that moment.

The tools used for painting were also intentionally prepared. Each paint brush was hand painted and inscribed with words such as legacy, harmony, and 528 Hz, and finished with a small lotus charm attached to the handle. The brushes rested inside mason jars filled with pebbles, sage, and aquatic greenery growing between the stones. Together these elements referenced the symbolism of the lotus flower rising from murky water, a reminder that growth, clarity, and beauty can emerge even from challenging circumstances. The lotus charm made the symbolism immediately visible, tying the jars and brushes back to the meaning behind The Black Lotus and the healing theme of the event.

The creative experience took place under an open canopy surrounded by nature at Historic RittenhouseTown. Participants painted, reflected, and connected while enjoying the peaceful outdoor environment. The setting allowed the art activity to feel calm and grounding while still being part of a larger day dedicated to wellness.

The location itself also carried meaning. Historic RittenhouseTown is a place connected to early Philadelphia history and routes associated with the Underground Railroad. Being in that space always feels special to me. I’ve always felt connected to the legacy of Harriet Tubman and the ancestors who helped guide people toward freedom. It’s a place I still visit today because when I’m there I feel a sense of reflection and connection to the past. Being able to facilitate a creative healing experience in a place connected to such powerful history made the moment even more meaningful.

The retreat itself was organized by Cassandra and The Black Lotus, a community-centered organization known for creating experiences focused on healing, reflection, and connection. The day included several activities designed to support wellness and bring people together in a meaningful way. Cassandra has also been someone who supported my work early on, helping me host my first solo art exhibition at The Black Lotus, so returning to this space for this event felt especially full circle.

Participants left with their finished paintings and the hand painted easels they worked from, each one still holding the crystal and message that had been placed before them. What started as a painting activity became a meaningful experience centered around reflection, creativity, and healing.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer.”
