If you’ve been watching the news lately, then you already know we’re living through a time when people feel more divided than ever. Whether the conversation is about immigration, healthcare, the economy, politics, or the future of America, emotions are running high. Every day brings another headline, another debate, and another reason for people to disagree. These conversations affect our families, our businesses, our communities, and the future we’re creating for the next generation. Somewhere in the middle of all that noise, I found myself asking one simple question: What happens when we stop seeing each other as human beings first?
As an Indigenous woman of color, a mother, an artist, an entrepreneur, and a proud American citizen, I’ve met people from every walk of life. I’ve learned that no headline can tell someone’s full story. Every person is dealing with something. Some are trying to keep food on the table. Some are working two jobs while raising children. Some are building businesses from the ground up. Some are studying late into the night, hoping a college degree will change the course of their lives. Some were born in America, while others came here searching for safety, opportunity, or simply a chance to build a better future. Our stories may be different, but I believe most of us want many of the same things. We want peace. We want stability. We want opportunities for ourselves and for the people we love. We all want to feel like we belong.
As America celebrates America250, I’ve been thinking about more than our history. I’ve been thinking about our future. What kind of country are we building for the next 250 years? What values will we leave behind? Those questions inspired me to create America: Love Is the Blueprint. I wasn’t interested in making a political statement. I wanted to make a human statement. I wanted to create artwork that reminds us that compassion doesn’t have to disappear just because our opinions are different. We can stand firm in what we believe while still treating one another with dignity, respect, and kindness.
Every time I paint, I’m reminded that some of the most beautiful works of art are created by bringing together colors that are completely different from one another. They don’t lose what makes them unique. Together, they create something stronger, richer, and more meaningful than they could on their own. I’ve always believed people have that same potential. Our differences don’t have to divide us. They can become the reason we learn from one another, grow together, and build stronger communities.
As a mother, I think about my son every day. He’s watching how I respond to the world around me. He’s learning from the conversations I have, the way I treat people, and the example I set. Long after today’s headlines are forgotten, I hope he remembers that his mother chose love over hate, conversation over condemnation, and understanding over fear. I hope he grows up believing that real strength isn’t measured by how loudly we argue, but by how we treat people when it’s hardest to do so.
My hope is that when someone sees this artwork or starts their morning with the America: Love Is the Blueprint mug, they’re reminded that behind every news story is a real family. Behind every political debate is a real person. Behind every opinion is a lifetime of experiences that shaped how someone sees the world. We don’t have to agree on everything to recognize each other’s humanity. I believe that’s where real change begins.
At Andromeda Cook Studio, my artwork has always been about creating conversations that bring people together instead of pushing them further apart. Whether I’m painting on canvas, creating public art, teaching young people, or designing products that become part of someone’s everyday life, my mission remains the same: to create art that inspires love, healing, reflection, and meaningful conversation. Art has the power to connect people in ways words sometimes cannot, and I believe that’s something our world needs now more than ever.
