Work Speaks Collector Mug is inspired by the life of Wilbert Montgomery, an African American running back born in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1954. He attended Abilene Christian University, where he became one of the school’s leading players. In 1977, he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Draft and began his professional career with the team. Over the next several seasons, he became known for his speed, endurance, and consistency, leading the team in rushing and earning Pro Bowl recognition.
He played during an era when football was especially physical, and running backs carried a heavy workload. Teammates and coaches often described him as disciplined, focused, and prepared, qualities he spoke about in interviews when discussing his approach to the game. His most remembered performance came in January 1981 in the NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys. The game was played in freezing temperatures, with snow and ice covering the field. Early in the game, Montgomery broke through the defense and ran for a long touchdown, sprinting across the frozen field while defenders struggled to keep their footing. In that same game, he rushed for over 190 yards, one of the strongest rushing performances in a championship game, helping send Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
Montgomery was respected for his preparation, discipline, and reliability. After retiring as a player, he became a coach, working with younger athletes and continuing his involvement in the game. His career reflects the impact of steady effort, preparation, and consistency over time.
The background artwork on this mug comes from an original painting created by my son, Lamonte, whose creative expression and imagination are a constant reminder that legacy is not only something we inherit, but something we continue to build. This piece brings together history, voice, and the next generation of artists in one meaningful object meant to be used every day.
The message of this mug connects both stories. Wilbert Montgomery’s career shows that quiet discipline and steady work can lead to lasting impact, and Lamonte’s artwork reflects the same patience and focus that creativity requires. Together, they remind us that progress often happens through consistent effort, and that over time, the work itself begins to speak.
